The Journey of Post-Polio Many locally born and immigrant Australian residents who had polio in the past may now be experiencing Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS). This shows up as complex fatigue, weakness, pain, and sleep and breathing problems decades later.

Recognising the Signs Even if their initial polio seemed mild (no paralysis), they could still be at risk for PPS. Watch for changes in mobility or their energy levels that may indicate new challenges.

Starting the Conversation Open, supportive conversations about post-polio can be empowering and help. Encourage them to share their experiences and let them know they have your support.
