Commonwealth provides $2m for Year of the Blood Donor

The Commonwealth Government has designated 2009 as the ‘Year of the Blood Donor’, with support from the Shadow Minister for Health, Nicola Roxon.

To support this initiative, the Government will provide $2 million to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS).

The aim of celebrating 2009 as the Year of the Blood Donor is to encourage more people to donate – it also marks the 80th anniversary of the provision of blood transfusion and collection services in Australia.

The Year of the Blood Donor will also recognise the vital role that the ARCBS plays to ensure that Australia has one of the safest, most robust blood systems in the world.
