Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities
Australia signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities when it opened for signature on 30 March 2007.
It is proposed that Australia consent to be bound by the Convention through ratification under Article 43.
Early ratification would be highly desirable given Australia’s active role in the negotiation of the Convention text, early signature and continued international support for the Convention.
It is proposed that this treaty action be undertaken as soon as practicable for these reasons, as well as to increase Australia’s prospects of participating in the inaugural election of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
