Dementia awareness week: arts and dementia in NSW

To launch dementia awareness week, Alzheimer’s Australia NSW will hold the Newcastle symposium: Arts and Dementia at Newcastle Region Art Gallery on Monday, 17 September.

The day will feature keynote speakers from Canada (Professor Ken Rockwood, Dalhousie University) and include Dr Mike Bird from the Australian National University, who collaborated with the National Gallery of Australia to investigate how viewing and experiencing art impacts on people with dementia.

Other topics include indigenous art, memory and story telling. The symposium runs from 8:15am – 5:00pm, with an $80 per person registration fee, which includes morning tea, lunch, afternoon drinks and performances by local musicians.

For further information go to www.alzheimers.org.au and go to 2007 National Dementia Awareness Month.
