Electronic drug register provides peace of mind in aged care

SPONSORED STORY – Victorian aged care provider Nagambie Aged Care has streamlined its services utilising an electronic controlled drug register, which has reduced the administrative burden on staff so they can spend more of their focus on residents care.

DiamondCare, an electronic controlled drug management platform by Modeus, was created to get rid of the hassle of drug administration for aged care staff while improving the accuracy of the drug register for aged care providers.

Chief Executive Officer of Nagambie Aged Care, Bronwyn Beadle, says that moving from the paper-based controlled drug logbooks to the DiamondCare system has made a world of difference at their aged care facility.

“Across aged care, the issues with paper-based controlled drug log books are well known. Paper logbooks are time consuming, prone to errors, a hassle to reconcile and very few nurses enjoy writing out the line entries every day,” explains Ms Beadle.

“At first, the DiamondCare system took a little getting used to, but the training and resources Modeus provided really helped the staff and they quickly adapted to using the system. The staff love the program now and would never go back to paper.

“The time the nurses save by getting off paper and using the system means they can spend more time caring for residents, which is ultimately their prime responsibility.”

Ms Beadle says Modeus approached them in 2018 about the new system and since implementing DiamondCare at the facility they have never looked back.

Nagambie Aged Care has found DiamondCare very beneficial in a number of ways, including:

  • Very accurate system

  • No issues with hard to read handwriting

  • Eliminating manual addition or subtraction errors that can be made on paper

  • More efficient than the paper system

  • DiamondCare system is linked directly to the pharmacy that supplies the resident controlled drugs

  • Dose administrations are processed easily

  • Daily stock checks are simpler and quicker

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms Beadle says the drug register made sure staff didn’t have the added stress of a paper register system, which many other aged care facilities would likely be facing.

“Whilst our facility hasn’t been directly affected with COVID cases, it’s an anxious time for everyone in aged care especially for the nurses with the reported outbreaks in many facilities. If anything, the system offers peace of mind from a medication safety perspective.”

Ms Beadle appreciates that the electronic drug register also prevents any drug misappropriation, as DiamondCare entries cannot be edited or scribbled out, so it’s easier to find data if investigations are required.

She adds that she would recommend any aged care facility to implement the DiamondCare software to boost their safety around drug management and to also save their staff on unnecessary administration you would normally have on a paper system.
