Fish for better heart
Heart patients should be consuming more than the recommended two fish meals a week to protect against irregular heartbeats and sudden death, according to a leading Australian cardiologist. David Colquhoun said omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish like salmon, tuna and swordfish, helped stabilise heart rhythm, lowered blood fats and improved mood.
Studies found most Australians consumed less than 200mg of omega-3 in food a day. However, the National Health and Medical Research Council suggests men should have 610mg a day and women 430mg.
