Healthcare increases in old age
As the population ages and technology advances, the cost of healthcare is likely to increase, Medibank Group executive, Laz Cotsios, claims. This was shown in a national trend in 2010-11 when all of the 10 most expensive private medical claims in Tasmania to Medibank Private were for people aged over 55 years.

This was shown in a national trend in 2010-11 when all of the 10 most expensive private medical claims in Tasmania to Medibank Private were for people aged over 55 years.
Tasmania’s top 10 claims included six cases of cardiac surgery varying in cost between $66,000 and $79,000 for people between the ages of 58 and 78 years, with the state’s top claim $143,493 for neurosurgery on a 76-year-old.
Other major claims included urological treatment ($82,000), spinal surgery ($75,000), the treatment of an 80-year-old stroke victim ($70,000), and claims for head-and-neck, bowel and renal surgery.
“While it’s easy to think you will never need serious health care, I imagine many of the patients on this list thought the same thing,” Mr Cotsios tells The Mercury.
