Chronically ill veterans may have their health monitored by health professionals without having to leave the home after an announcement was made recently by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon, and Minister for Broadband Communications and Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy.
Mr Snowdon said the $8 million trial would use “in-home telemonitoring technology”, combining “the best” of the National Broadband Network (NBN) high speed broadband.
“This trial will take advantage of reliable, high-speed and high-capacity broadband capability to change the way health services are delivered to the veteran community and allow veterans to access high-quality healthcare from home,” he added.
According to Mr Snowdon, vital statistics would be monitored from home and veterans would also have access to high definition video consultations with their GP or nurse coordinator when required.
With about 300 veterans set to participate in the trial from July next year, veterans in the trial would have an individual healthcare plan developed for them in consultation with their GP.
