The University of Queensland and aged care provider Blue Care have teamed up to offer an aged care management course which will up-skill aged care staff to help meet the growing demand for quality care in Australia.
The Aged Care Management course was the brainchild of Blue Care’s residential services director, Richard Olley.
Dr Anthony Tuckett, senior lecturer at the University of Queensland’s School of Nursing and Midwifery (pictured), told DPS News the team was “one-step-ahead” of the Productivity Commission’s report into aged care, which was released last August.
“The Productivity Commission’s report highlighted the need for management courses specific to the aged care industry, which is exactly what we are offering,” Dr Tuckett said.
A Graduate Certificate in Aged Care Management was designed for nursing professionals working in the aged care sector and community organisations to enable them to effectively assess and respond to emerging health planning and management issues.
The course would also be typically useful for current managers as it would “ground them” in what they were already doing and deepen their knowledge and skill in “contemporary management”.
“The development of this online course demonstrates the effectiveness of strong ties between the UQ School of Nursing and Midwifery and Blue Care,” Dr Tuckett said, adding the collaboration has ensured the course has both “theory and vocational elements”.
Topics covered include industry-specific financial modelling, planning and performance; service delivery theory and models, along with current and future workforce issues.
