Liz Callaghan has been announced as the new chief executive of Palliative Care Australia (PCA).

Ms Callaghan is director of Strategic Policy for Catholic Health Australia, and has previously held roles in the South Australian and Victorian Departments of Health, Metropolitan Domiciliary Care, the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards and the Department of Management at RMIT University Melbourne.

Professor Patsy Yates, PCA president, says Ms Callaghan has significant policy, leadership and management experience in the notforprofit and government sectors.

“Her skills and experience will be of great benefit to Palliative Care Australia and further our aim of ensuring quality care at the end of life for all Australians,” Professor Yates says.

Ms Callaghan has qualifications in Nursing, holds a Bachelor of Social Work, a Graduate Diploma in Human Services Research, Monitoring and Evaluation and a Master's Degree in Public Policy and Management.

She has edited and contributed to two books: Determining the Future: A Fair Go and Health for All and Exploring the Connections: Catholic Social Teaching and the Social Determinants of Health.

“Ms Callaghan has a strong vision and commitment to palliative care and issues associated with social determinants of health,” Professor Yates says.

The PCA board also acknowledges the contributions of Rita Evans as interim chief executive.

Ms Callaghan will commence in her new role from Monday, 27 October 2014.
