New funding gives Canberra carers a break

New funding of $210,000 has been awarded to Illawarra Retirement Trust to provide better respite services for the carers of Canberra’s frail older residents, ACT Senator Gary Humphries, has announced.

The Belconnen-based group will offer four hours of respite care per week, to give carers the break they sometimes need. The hours can be taken in weekly, fortnightly or overnight blocks, and all care will be provided in-home to minimise the disruption for those being cared for.

Illawarra Retirement Trust is one of 28 services across Australia to receive a share of the Government’s $15 million National Respite Carers Program funding. The four year program aims to provide new and expanded respite care services to the carers of older Australians with high care needs.

Carers in the ACT can access the Belconnen service by contacting Illawarra Retirement Trust directly, or by calling the Commonwealth Carer Respite service on 1800 059 059.
