New resources for ATSI in aged care

Informative and engaging animated and audio resources have been developed by the Aged Care Complaints Scheme (the Scheme) to encourage community members to raise concerns about problems with the quality of aged care received by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) older people.

The Aged Care Complaints Scheme (the Scheme) is encouraing people to raise concerns about problems with the quality of aged care received by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander older people.

The visual resources are in an animation format and are available at no cost to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander older people, their friends and families, aged care services and other intermediaries working with them.

The animations, which are 45 seconds or five minutes long, include versions in English, Torres Strait Islander Creole, Arrernte, Pitjantjatjara, Warlpiri, Alyawarra and Luritja.

The segments use endearing characters to highlight the idea that ‘a little yarn goes a long way’ when trying to sort out problems with aged care services.

This could include problems with the way older people are being treated, their health, the food they are being given, or the cleanliness and safety of their care environment.

Audio versions highlighting these messages are also available on CD in 45 second or five minute segments.

These new DVD and CD resources will be distributed to aged care services, intermediaries and organisations working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is also possible to view, listen or read a transcript of the animations and audio from the Scheme’s website.

These resources support printed materials (flip chart, fact sheet and brochure) developed earlier this year for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, which are also available in English, Torres Strait Islander Creole, Arrernte, Pitjantjatjara, Warlpiri, Alyawarra and Luritja.

Depending on the resource, you can view, download or print it via the ‘Resources’ tab on the Scheme's website or order them using the online order form.
