New South Melbourne aged care facility

As Australia’s population rapidly ages and the demand for additional aged care facilities grow, Victorian aged care providers and the state government are meeting the call for more services for older Australians.

The announcement of a new residential aged care facility to be built in South Melbourne was made last week following an agreement between government and not-for-profit aged care provider Claremont and SouthPort Aged Care.

Minister for Health and Ageing, David Davis, confirms the government had signed a long-term lease granting Claremont and SouthPort Aged Care the “go ahead” as part of the Aged Care Land Bank initiative.

“This agreement will ensure older people living in South Melbourne will have access to modern, residential aged care facilities, close to family and friends in their local community,” Mr Davis says.

The new facility will be built at the former St Vincent’s Boys’ Orphanage, which holds great historical significance as it was reportedly the first purpose-built Catholic orphanage established in Victoria; making it one of the oldest remaining orphanage buildings in the state.

The City of Port Phillip will also contribute $3 million to Claremont and SouthPort Aged Care to establish the new facility.

Both Claremont Home and SouthPort Aged Care have a long history of providing aged care services in South Melbourne.

“The Victorian coalition government committed a further $2 million boost in the 2011 State Budget for the Aged Care Lank Bank to retain even more land for future aged care facilities,” Mr Davis says.
