NSW creates ‘Hospitalist’ role

A new ‘Hospitalist’ position is to be trialled in 11 NSW public hospitals, where they will coordinate patient care across several specialities including aged care, emergency medicine, and cardiology.

The positions aim to create a new direction for doctors who do not want to become specialists in a particular field but who want to increase their skills across a number of speciality areas.

Hospitals are expected to work closely and collaboratively with specialist teams especially for acutely and chronically ill patients, many of whom are elderly and have complex needs.

The role will be to ensure a ‘smooth patient journey’ across hospital departments. The 20 hospitalist positions will be trialled in a number of hospitals including Westmead, Nepean, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven.
