Elderly residents in the south-western regional Victorian town of Warrnambool will feel safer after ‘peepholes’ on the front doors of their homes will soon be installed.
Named ‘Operation Peephole’, The Standard newspaper reports the $10,000 project will include installing viewing peepholes and other door safety measures such as chains at the homes of up to 80 older residents.
As part of the Victorian government’s Community Safety Fund, south-west councils will also receive more than $27,000 for various projects improving infrastructure, safety education and awareness to aid seniors.
Warrnambool City Council reportedly joined forces with Victoria Police after an elderly Warrnambool resident opened her door to a home invader last year.
Eligibility criteria will be developed and announced in coming months, with the first 80
eligible people to apply provided with peepholes and safety chains.
