Public health cover in Belgium
Australia has entered into a reciprocal health agreement with Belgium, allowing each nation’s citizens to use the other’s public health facilities while travelling or staying for a short period in the other country. Reciprocal benefits will begin in 2008. Under the agreement, Australians who visit Belgium will be covered for subsidised treatment in its public health system including hospital, medical care and prescription drugs. A similar number of Belgians visit Australia each year as vice versa, and so will be able to obtain Medicare benefits.
