Qld’s specialist legal services for older people

The National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLC) has congratulated the
Queensland Government on its recent allocation of $1.9m for the provision of legal
services for seniors at risk of abuse and exploitation.

Five Queensland community legal centres – Caxton in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Hervey Bay and Toowoomba – will receive funds to deliver this service.

Caxton Legal Centre began a service with limited funds targeted at older people more than five years ago. Staff at Caxton had noticed growing numbers of older clients with legal matters related specifically to their stage of life. Since then other community legal centres have also noted this as a rapidly expanding area of legal need. Caxton Legal Centre has been actively seeking funds from the state and federal governments to expand this service for the past four years.

NACLC welcomed the Queensland Government’s initiative. It invites other
governments to match this funding, and to assist vulnerable older citizens nationally.
