Should I consider private home care while waiting for a Home Care Package?

While you are waiting for your HCP or your interim package, you may choose to pay for services you require through non-government-funded providers.

The latest government data revealed that individuals approved for a Level 1 Package may wait between two to seven months, while those awaiting Level 2 Packages may have to wait between seven to eight months.

For Level 3 Packages, the wait extends from seven to 11 months and Level 4 packages can take between three and 12 months to become available. These extended wait periods can leave individuals without essential support, making privately funded home care a viable interim solution.

Why consider private home care while on a waitlist?

Avoid delays in receiving care

The high demand for Home Care Packages often results in lengthy wait times before people can access government-funded support. Delaying necessary care can lead to deteriorating health, an increased risk of falls and additional stress on family caregivers. Engaging private home care services ensures people receive immediate assistance while awaiting government support.

Maintain independence and quality of life

Without proper home care, seniors and people with disability may struggle with daily activities such as personal care, meal preparation and housekeeping. Paying for private home care in the interim allows individuals to maintain their independence and continue living comfortably in their homes.

Prevent caregiver burnout

Family members often step in to provide care while their loved one waits for a Home Care Package. However, this can lead to significant physical and emotional strain. Private home care services offer respite for family caregivers, ensuring they do not experience burnout while waiting for government-funded assistance.

There are many different respite care service options available to give you a break, from as little as a few hours to multiple days a week. You can read more about respite care in the Aged Care Guide to respite care.

Receive personalised and flexible support

Government-funded Home Care Packages come with restrictions on the types of services that can be provided. Private home care services offer greater flexibility, allowing individuals to tailor care to their specific needs. Whether it is extra companionship, additional therapy or assistance with specialised medical conditions, private providers can offer a broader range of services that complement government-funded support.

Improve health outcomes and reduce hospitalisation risks

Lack of adequate home care can increase the risk of hospitalisation due to falls, poor nutrition or unmanaged health conditions. Private home care services ensure people receive the necessary support to prevent medical complications, reducing hospital admissions and promoting better health outcomes.

What private home care services are available while waiting?

Personal care assistance

You can receive help with bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting to maintain your dignity and independence.

Housekeeping services

Providers can offer light housekeeping, laundry and meal preparation services to create a safe and comfortable living environment.

Medical and skilled nursing care

Private home care providers may offer medication management, wound care and the option to monitor ongoing conditions.

Companionship and social support

Providers can reduce how isolated a person feels by interacting with them and getting them to take part in fun activities.

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation support

They may be able to assist with prescribed exercises and mobility support for those recovering from surgery or injury.

Respite care for family caregivers

Private home care can offer a sense of relief for family members providing care, allowing them to rest and recharge.

While waiting for a Home Care Package, privately paying for home care services can be a beneficial investment in health, independence and overall quality of life. Immediate access to professional care helps prevent decline, supports family caregivers and ensures people continue to receive the assistance they need.

Once a government-funded package becomes available, private care services can be adjusted or combined for a more comprehensive support plan.
