Village residents are Australia’s happiest seniors
Ninety four per cent of all retirement village residents are satisfied with their life in a village and believe their overall happiness has increased or stayed the same since moving in, according to the largest national survey of village residents released recently.
The Villages Census Report 2013, produced by independent analysts McCrindle Research, also found the vast majority considered the fees they pay for services in the village to be reasonable.
In further statistics that demonstrate the satisfaction of senior Australians who live in retirement villages:
- 75% of respondents were happy with their decision to move into their village and would make the same decision again;
- 90% said their decision to move was a good financial decision;
- 91% said their social life had improved or stayed the same; and
- the ability to stay independent, live in a safe environment and use on-site facilities were the biggest factors behind people’s decision to downsize to a village.
Mary Wood, Retirement Living Council executive director, said the report demonstrates the important role retirement villages play in the community.
“As we age our housing requirements change: grab rails, no steps and removing trip hazards in showers extend people’s independence and gives them dignity,” Ms Wood said.
“This report shows that nearly 180,000 senior Australians have made an active and positive choice to live in a village community, in homes designed for their physical needs, with access to medical and community services, as well as company and friendship.
“Importantly, the report finds that retirement villages are affordable and accessible for all. Seventy eight per cent of village residents are age pensioners, and 70% report that the cost of living in a village is the same or less than their living costs in their former family home.”
More older Australians now live in a retirement village than in aged care facilities, but many more villages will need to be built to meet the burgeoning demand.
“This report identifies the practical benefits of retirement living for individuals. It’s critical that our political leaders listen to this vote of confidence in a sector that is enabling elderly Australians to live happy and extended lives, and work with industry to help the flourishing sector grow,” Ms Wood said.
